OK......i'm no expert so comments are welcomed but first off all, personal computers (PC) run slow because of all the websites you've ever clicked on and things your computer has saved that you don't want anymore...first thing is to clean it all up.

I do this daily:
...open Internet explorer, find tools,Internet options, then delete files, cookies, history, delete all,you must trust me on all of this. Doing this only deletes temporary files that your computer saved without your knowledge.
...find days to keep history,I'm sure you have it on 20 or 21,every time you visit a web page this stays on your hard drive, that's why pages take so long to load,Because its searching your hard drive......put it on zero.
OK that's cleaned a little.

...download a free virus scanner like ad-ware. A computer needs baby sitting and has to be cleaned up regularly...at least 2 times a week.

EXTRA TIPS:
...also you can add some more ram to your computer. ram is your "water pipes"... if its not big enough for the things you are using then, your computer slows down. Just buy more Ram for your computer...the more RAM the faster your computer should start up or run programs.

...move some of your songs to a CD so you can free up space on the

...you can disable startup programs. Start, Run
type in msconfig...be careful and don't disable any Microsoft System files.

...delete stuff you don't want from you mailbox...especially attachments (photos, songs, jokes, etc that take up lots of MB

THINGS YOU SHOULD DO ONLY IF YOU UNDERSTAND IT:

I've never done this but just learned that i should:
...next click start,all programmes,accessories,system tools,disk clean up...do both drives.
...next click start again, all programmes, accessories, system tools, disk defragment, analyze both c and d to see if they both need a defragment.

Here's more you can do but you must be careful not to disable programs you want (but if you do you can always go back and enable them again...you might want to leave this to a professional if you don't understand it:
...you can click run, in run type in msconfig...here is your system configuration, which show you what programmes are starting up,be careful not to disable what you don't recognize or what you want to keep...,you will see in there for instance...look around to see what you want to start up or not...?
3w's dot spybot dot info/en/index dot html

I don't understand this but someone told me you can do this...don't if you don't understand what you're doing though:
...go into Start - run - type in Prefetch, select all, delete then go into start - run - type in %temp%, select all, delete. They said they learned this from someone they called in regards to their Dell computer running slow. She does this every once in a while.

Anna - great advice and these really work. There is one more thing to do..

Shut down, wait till the computer is completely shut down, then unplug the power cord from the tower for about 1 minute.

Start back up and there will be a difference.

Wow, hummmmm. funny this should coome up now. I was just talking to daughter in Denver, she was trying to explain to me over the phone, how to de fragmetize ? She said it is simple. I don't understand hardly anything you have written. I understand the reason, just not the jargon. I will seek help. I can do Louies suggestion...that seems simple. I could unplug and leave unplugged, that would really solve many many problems.lol
I will put this to the side and hope someone comes along to help. Thanks for posting, Have a Happy Easter,,,to you and the family.

All good recomendations that should help. To bad the PM feature isn't possible because there are some useful programs that I use to keep my puter wispy clean. I don't want to post those here because it might seem like advertising. Brands and places to buy would also be nice to pass along.

Something I did was to buy an external hard drive to store music in. The reason for that was because we transfer music from that drive into our IPODS. With several differant genre's to transfer from it makes for great workout music.

A side benefit to the external hard drive is we copy & transfer all important files to the external drive. That way if the internal drive crashes nothing is lost when a new internal is installed and windows is reinstalled.

Since all you have to do once files are transferred is unplug the external no speed is affected nor does any cleaning need to take place.

HI I DEFRAG EVERY DAY ALSO ALL MY CHECKS
I AM FOREVER COLLECTING STUFF SO HAVE TO.

Posted by Winner Still on 23 Mar 2008 1:00 AM

Hahahahahaha, sorry you had to lose your lunch hour. lol.  Really Anna, shame on you for telling a fib.  *_*  Seriously, I think all my blogs may be that long. I realize I need to look up the word and find the meaning of "blog". I know it is short for something. I think evryone should write long blogs as far as that goes. I know everyone has more to say. See...it's the time thing. I have a bit more 'home' time than some, not sure if that is a blessing or not. We will say it is for now.
You know I love typing so get used to long comments, long blogs and wish me luck with any writing I may endeavor to take on as a challenge.
You have a Great Easter, tell your mom hello, and have nice visit with the family. Take care, chat with you soon.

I did the cookie thing too and wow! Yes! A big improvement! Plus Bobk helped me out with another problem and I am just over the moon with my pc now!!! So glad people post these things as I am so "challenged" when it comes to technicalities!! We need a forum for such matters!! God knows we all have pc problems often enough to warrant one!......or is that just me? I did know about defragging luckily, and that does help a lot of things. Did`nt think to defrag my d though.....u learn something every day!
