Tchniclly a year is 365.2422 days long . Using a calendar with 365 days would result in an error of 0.2422 days or almost 6 hours a year .

After 100 years , this calendar would be more than 24 days ahead of the seasons .

So the creators of the Gregorian Calendar , which was introduced in 1582 , decided to omit leap years 3 times every 400 years .

This would shorten the calendar every so oftenand get rid of the annual excess of 11 minutes and 14 seconds .

So in addition to the rule that a leap year occurs every 4 years , a new rule was added:  A century year is not a leap year unless it is divisible by 400.

Well I thought it was interesting anyway .
