View Full Version : Why has overfifties.com introduced this new discussion board?

The old message board operates on a much slower and less efficient system, it was becoming bogged down and slow. It also wasn't very good at filtering out bad messages.

This new board is much faster and has a lot more features and will cope with growth over the next few years. Some of the benefits to you are:

• Increased speed
• Able to see who is online in the discussion board
• Ability to send PM (Private messages - like email) to other members
• Easy to put photos on to the board
• Better security, unwanted posters can be banned and no-one can impersonate you (password etc.)
• Calendar which can be added to by the members
• Easier formating of text (e.g. fonts, colors , size of text etc.)
• Far advanced search facilities
• Members can update their own profile

How can I enter color, italics, bold, etc. in this closed forum?

Also, what is the signature and how do I use that feature?

Does each reply start a new thread? If so, I have the wrong concept as to what a thread is; I thought it was the title of the topic.

You asked for suggestions so here goes!

IMHO I find that the addition of so many old and long unused discussions to the new board only adds unnecessary clutter.
A search would be almost impossible since the majority of them are not listed according to subject matter.

The amount of threads from new discussions is confusing enough to navigate.

You have a great idea going here but I have a feeling I'm not the only one who would like to see these new discussions start all fresh and new without carrying over long dead topics.

Would it be possible to move pre existing topics over here If and when they are revived in the old style discussion board and not in huge indiscriminate batches as they are now?

Hi Snowden,
When you want to reply to a comment click the 'post reply' button and you will be able to type in a comment.

When you want to type text larger than normal (such as this) you just click the button saying 'large' in the little drop down menu above where you type and you will then be able to type in bigger text

So to put text in 'royal blue' such as this just click the color drop down menu and then type in your text.. simple as that.

Also the 'New Thread' button will start a whole new topic. 'post reply' is best for replying to someone elses comment.
take care

Hi Tori,
Yes you are absolutely right. We will continue to refine the topics in here and filter out old ones. Feel free to start new ones too. The old ones are just in here to get people started. Thanks again for your comment :D

Also if you have any good ideas for subjects for the top level, put them in here and we will put them up for you! I can even set you up to monitor your own topic if you wish.

I am not going to mess around with many button, bells and whistles because I finally got in here and don't want to accidently slam myself right out. Whew, it was a real chore.

Thanks staff for "keeping on" keeping on until you fixed me up where I can post. Now, later today, I will read help again until I master this. Never liked a message board before but I suspect once we all get used to this, we will enjoy it more and more.

the one that is throwin me is the new thread and the reply post . It appears both do the same thing.

What really bothers me is that when I post either one, it over-rides the name of the last poster. Makes me really look mouthy!! Course I may be, but before I could sort of sneak in a post and not be "high profile".

It really is nice to be able to click on color and it automatically be put in rather than having to figure out the URL for typing that in the older forum. In fact, I never could get a ;) to post before.

I am at a loss as to where I find the member list. Seems the first day I came in here, I found it.....now, it is lost.

Just about the time I think I have learned something, I go to something else to learn. Then I find I have forgotten the previous one I THOUGHT I learned I bet if overfifties staff monitors this they have a heck of a whirl following me around!

Lol Shar. Just think if we keep this up long enough one of these days we'll be the resident experts of these boards!

I think I figured out that if we put a subject in where it says "Post Subject" it becomes a new thread. I haven't been doing that lately and my posts seem to be winding up in the right place.:)
