I could never find the interest in posting in a diary.

However, I have posted in a Joy Journal.

Once when I seemed to stay blue I caught a glimpse of an OPRAH show. She was crying! I flicked back quickly to see what was going on.

She was holding a book while sitting by a lady and talking about the book. The author was the lady sitting beside her.

In this book, the woman shared that she had started a JOY JOURNAL listing a minimum of 5 (any more was great) things she was greatful for. According to the author it had caused postive changes in her life.

The reason for Oprah's tears was the verification of this process.
Since Oprah has such an appropriation of money and followers I was so surprised to see her tears, however, she said the journal had made uplifting and life changing effects in her world and she just had to share it with others.

I thought, that takes little energy (I had none) but I can keep a pencil and notebook by my chair and do that. So, I did....hoping for Oprah's changes in my life........I was amazed at the growth and at the lifting of my spirits.

Count your many blessings
Count them one by one
Count your many blessings
See what God has done

The mind absorbs what we feed it.

I really like the idea of a joy journal. I never heard of one before but as the name imples, it would contain "good things". And yes, the mind absorbs what we pour into it. How careful we have to be with the things we "pour into it". This is not to say that we will have nothing but joy in our lives. Let's face it, we live in the real world but we can and must learn to deal with the good and the bad. Ideally concentrating on the "joy" will diminish the bad or sad things in our lives

I keep a small journal and the events of the day go into it. Simple stuff like calls from out of state, doctor visits, birthdays, what was planted, where we went. Looking back, I can see what an ordinary life we lead. Still, when we wonder how many years ago certain things happened, all I do is check out the journal for that year. Recently I visited my sister in Tennessee and saw an entire shelf of her journals from the early 70s to this year. I perused a few and saw such entires as "3 eggs", or "4 eggs". I assume that was the daily output from the chickens they kept back then. With over 100 acres one can easily keep chickens, provided th fox stays out of the henhouse!

Being a writer of poetry I keep what I call a day book into which I put lines and thoughts as they come to me. Then at some point in the future they may find their way into a poem. I also keep small bits of the day's happenings.

During WWII we were encourged to have victory gardens, raise chickens/eggs knit squares to form blankets for our soldiers all of which we chidren assiduously did with patritotic ferver along with other assignments.

I wish I had kept a log. We lived in an urban area but was able to sell a few eggs to the neighbors along with squab to resturants so I envy your sisters land area. I did a flash back after reading your note.
