Come on Cuz, we need cats to eat the mice.

Rather have the mice.
They don't torture, maim and slaughter MILLIONS of small native birds, reptiles and little furry critters around the world every single day. |

We don't have cats doing that here, they don't last long in the wild. What we do have are coyotes, snakes, hawks and eagles killing the little furry creatures along with killing lizards, small snakes and small birds.
My cat stays home and keeps my garage mouse free. And, he and my dog are buddies. |

U.S. Faces Growing Feral Cat Problem National Geographic News .... Feral cats are the offspring of stray or abandoned household pets. .... they quickly revert to a wild state and form colonies wherever food and shelter are available. Some feline experts now estimate 70 MILLION feral cats live in the United States ... .... these stealthy predators decimate bird populations and threaten public health. Ron Jurek, a wildlife biologist for the CALIFORNIA Department of Fish and Game ... "Cats do kill wildlife to a significant degree.....," he said. .... there are hundreds of cats per square mile (1.6 square kilometers)—more cats than nature can support. .... some experts estimate that each year domestic and feral cats kill HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of birds, and more than a BILLION small mammals, such as rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks. ".... they quickly revert to a wild state and form colonies wherever food and shelter are available."
The key qualifier here is "wherever food and shelter are available". That would restrict them mainly to urban and suburban areas and around farm houses and buildings, areas where the native animals have mostly been displaced due to development. I live in an undeveloped area where cats don't survive very long on their own, too many native predators. Stray cats are just another source of protein for the coyotes. Don't blame cats, blame the owners that neglect to have their pets neutered. |

A 'kill' rate of a BILLION native critters a year must suggest that their predation is more widespread - maybe not in your barren wilderness, but in more 'congenial' locations. And, believe me, I DO blame cat-owners. They ALL say "oh dear, not my little moggie - she's neutered, she's an indoor cat" etc etc etc. But ALL feral cats come from domestic cats. They are un-natural predators not native to the continent and from whom indigenous wildlife has no instinctive defence. An intensive culling program is the ONLY meaningful antidote. |

There are a lot of old ladies that love their cats as family. Put a bounty on drunks is a better idea.

Calm down Cuz, I agree feral cats are a problem but beg to differ on whether they can survive in undeveloped areas. Cats were in the America's long before man showed up, they evolved along with all the other wildlife native to these shores. It's a fact that none of the smaller cat species survived in the northern part of this hemisphere most likely due to better adapted predators. Feral cats are like Rattus Norvegicus, they both thrive near human habitation and neither can survive for long away from humans.
The biggest threat to all wildlife is man. Do you have a man eating dog? |
