PS. Remember once you have carried out these instructions,
close your computer and re-start.
Question 1:
I get to the main Ballroom entry page and wait for
at 60 seconds - 2 mins but there is no place to type in my
nickname or sometimes I get an error.
Answer 1:
The new chat room runs on Java and usually needs
the latest version of Internet Explorer running, with no
other applications running at the same time. Having the latest
browser is always a good idea as it opens you up to the the
latest web-sites and generally makes life easier once it's
installed.
Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/
Click on search and either download the latest version of Internet
Explorer 5.5 or if you have that already just type
Java into the search with Windows 95 or 98 or Windows 2000
if that's what you use.
Then download: Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft
VM) for Internet Explorer (Build 3802, released 1/25/01)
It should look like something like this...Try and get the
latest build for your computer and version of windows.

Once you have installed that re-start your computer.
Also a handy tip is to try and make sure you don't have
too many windows open or other programs when you enter
the chat room... or your computer might run out of Ram
and crash.
Question 2:
I use a Macintosh, and I get a strange message saying
I need at least Java 2.1 or higher. What do I do?
Answer 2 :
Apple Macintosh users that get a message saying they need at
least Java 2.1 or higher, you should go to
http://www.apple.com/java/
and download the latest version of Java, it's around 4.6 meg, then once it's
loaded double click and install it.
Then re-start your computer and your away it should work fine then.

Question
3:
I'm in the room but for some reason, my computer crashes
or the room pushes me out. When I try to log back in, it won't
let me in or it says someone is already using my name. What
do I do?

The application (chat room server) sometimes gets
confused and needs a little time before you can log back
in if for some reason your login crashes. You can either
ad a number to your name e.g. jack1 or just give it say 20
mins to clear, (you may have to re-start to your computer)
then try again.
No one is actually blocked apart
from the real trouble makers or people causing disputes or
swearing and overfifties moderators oversee this process.
So don't worry folk it's not you, just the computers... :

Sometimes I can get into the site but other times
it is really slow and takes an age for the pages to load.
What do I do?

First check if it is the same when you look at other
web sites like http://www.yahoo.com
This will help you to establish
if it is just the overfifties site or all sites. You could
phone your ISP or Internet Service Provider if it happens
a lot, say every day for a week. It has been known for some
websites to disappear for a day as some Internet links will
just drop out. Once a main cable to Australia was cut when
a boat anchor ripped up the main cable around Singapore.

Will the Ballroom Chat work on
my web TV?
Answer

It does seem that Web TV can not
support the Ballroom Chat. Go to the Balcony and that
should be fine.
Contact your local ISP to upgrade from Web TV for the Ballroom.
