What now ?? .......
....in 1968 my husband, 2 small boy-children ( then 3 &
1 year old ) immigrated to South Africa. My husband as a
technician for a well known automobile firm, got a free
transfer on an immigration ship, the "Europa" by Lloyd Triestino,
for both himself and his family.
We came from a small town in Northern Germany as our life
had been somewhat boring thus far - but also fairly comfortable.
I thought to myself - I am not happy with the ever again
daily schedule.
Gee, there had to be something else to life other than dish-
& nappy washing, cooking, cleaning, shopping and visiting
the grand parents..... so I answered an advertisement for
mechanics and technicians in South Africa.
To my surprise the answer came so quickly, that I did not
have much time to think, but fill in the forms and show
them to my husband for signing. He thought I was quiet mad
at the time, but never the less agreed to visit the South
African consulate in Cologne, of which we received an invitation
to present ourselves. |
We
where accepted as immigrates because we were seen as an
enterprising young couple and received lots of help, understanding
and welcoming in the strange country.
For the next 18 years we worked and, lived in comfort, sent
our kids to school, high school and college in this wonderful
country. We met fantastic people of different races, enjoyed
the outdoor life, the bush and seasides.
But as things go in real live - we're divorced now - and
living in Germany again, me in Hamburg my hometown, my ex-husband
in Bavaria, and one of the sons is married, and lives still
in Johannesburg - South Africa.
The other son lives in Germany as well. I feel I've lived
a very fulfilled life so far, but still feel much to young
to submit to a " retired " life..... Also, I find, if you've
been away in a foreign country for a long time, you've lost
touch with the people at home ( who've done nothing else,
than yourself, before you've moved to that other country
) I'm searching for people who had that same experience
- for e-mail on that subject - or any other :o))
